James Barron BSc (Hons) MRICS IMAPS

Job Title: Managing Director

Career: Since graduating from De Montfort University in 1993 with an Honours Degree in Building Surveying, James has acquired more than 20 years’ experience as a chartered surveyor, working for several surveying companies before establishing his own business, Barron Surveying Services Ltd in 2004. While he predominantly focuses on the residential sector, he has extensive knowledge and experience of all building surveying disciplines. He is also firmly committed to the Continued Professional Development he must undertake as a chartered member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

James says: “I like the detail of the job and delivering a quality service. What I don’t like is letting people down! Communication is so important too and a key part of that is writing survey reports in layman’s terms. I strive to tell you exactly what you need to know, but in a way that you will easily understand it.”

How did you get into the surveying business?
It’s in the family; my father was a Chartered Surveyor. I wanted a career that wasn’t a desk job! A building won’t come to my office.

Best thing about the business?
Adaptability. We are flexible enough to adapt to a customer’s specific needs. We really listen to clients, and tailor our work to suit. We thrive on the variety of surveying that we provide.

And the worst!
Rain. A wet day on site can dampen anyone’s spirits.

When you are not at Barron Surveying Services, how do you relax?
My other love is cycling, road and mountain biking. I have a fleet of bikes, but there is always room for another! I ride cycle ‘sportive’ across the country and love the ‘thrill of the hill’.

James, what’s Sara’s best business quality?
Organisation. If in doubt about who, what or how, just ask Sara.

Finally, describe the business in three words?
Caring, trustworthy and reliable.

Sara Barron

Job Title: Administrator/Company Secretary

Career: Sara began a career in banking in her home town of Minehead at the age of 16, starting with various back office admin duties. After moving to Plymouth in 1992, she had her first introduction to mortgages. A promotion to Assistant Branch Manager for a building society followed in 2000. Two years later she left to have the couple’s son Daniel.

Sara says: “We are approachable and reliable. The minute you call us you immediately get through to a member of the team, not a person in a call centre. If we say James will be there at 9.30 AM, he will be and if he can’t, we ring ahead to say why.”

How did you get into the surveying business?
Daniel was just two at the time when James was leaving for work at 7am and back at 7pm. James rarely saw him, and something had to give. I had a banking background, so it made sense to support James in setting up our own business.

Best thing about the business?
Doing things, the way we want to for the benefit of the client, rather than being forced to follow corporate rules.

And the worst!
An empty diary wondering where the next job is coming from and a full diary wondering how we are going to fit all the work in. It’s a real balancing act!

When you are not at Barron Surveying Services, how do you relax?
My main passion is singing. I am part of a ladies barbershop chorus and a quartet. If I’m resting my tonsils, I am either on a countryside walk or at the gym.

Sara what’s James's best business quality?
He’s logical and methodical, everything the best surveyor should be. He’s exceptionally reliable too. If I ask him to call back a client, I know he will.

Finally, describe the business in three words?
Efficient, effective, engaging.
